Women in Surgery

WinS is a national organisation working to promote surgery as a career for women and to enable women who have chosen a career in surgery to realise their professional goals.

SCRUBS, in collaboration with WinS have organised an event at the Students’ Union at Queen’s University in Belfast on Thursday 7th May 2009 from 7.30pm. Guest speakers, including Dr Catherine Gilliland (former SCRUBS president), Ms Trushna Rao, Ms Suzie Hampton and Ms Angela Carragher, will speak on their career and the path they took to get where they are today.

Women make excellent surgeons and there are many highly successful female surgeons in the world today. Despite this, they remain relatively under-represented in the profession: While there are up to 70% female students at some medical schools, only 6.5% of consultant surgeons are women.

Let’s hope that this meeting gives all those wannabe female surgeons out there some food for thought and encourages some healthy competition with the boys for jobs in surgery in future years…
