Women in Surgery Event

In an attempt to broaden our events diary and open up new and exciting opportunities for our members, SCRUBS ran a ‘Women in Surgery’ event on 7th May 2009 in collaboration with the WinS organisation. The idea came about following Aarti and Koo’s visit to London in December to the actual Women in Surgery Conference. On their return we discussed the possibility of running something similar in Belfast to make it more accessible to the medics here.

In all four speakers attended: Dr Alison McCoubrey, Ms Trushna Roe, Ms Suzie Hampton, Ms Rachel Deyermond and Ms Angela Carragher (associate post-graduate dean.) They spoke to over 20 keen girls about; pursuing careers in surgery as women, pregnancy and part-time work. CVs were discussed and how to tailor them to such a job.

The talks went down brilliantly with lots of useful information and tips given. An interactive element followed, where speakers and attendees discussed how electives can be useful for getting involved in audits for publication, thus improving one’s CV. Following the talks there was a soft drinks and snacks reception and we raffled off a bottle of wine as a spot prize to the attendees; this was won by Marie Kearns (3rd year).
