On the 9th December, Dr Barry Kelly of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast gave a talk to our members on the ‘basics of analysing and presenting x-rays’ Over 60 members turned up from 1st, 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th year to hear him give some useful hints and tips on presenting images on the ward (and in OSCE situations!)

Dr Kelly focused on chest x-rays covering topics including; pneumothorax, heart failure, lobar pneumonia and assessing the placement of NG-tubes and endotracheal tubes. He also talked about abdominal x-rays and the hallmark signs of visceral perforation. Spinal and cranial images were also considered, looking at prolapsed discs and haematomas.

Such a great turn-out could not go without a prize draw for the attendees - MPS donated 5 OUP Handbooks of Clinical Specialties and we also had a copy of Dr Kelly’s very own ‘Crash Course Imaging’ textbook to give away. Thanks again to Dr Kelly for the advice and tips he gave during this talk and we hope to run this event again next year!

2.	Hoodies- Aarti…..There was an issue with the Scrubs branding as the font is unusual. Luke liaised with the supplier on the issue and they managed to hand embroider our logo. The possible cost is £22.50 per hoodie and members or conference attendees may purchase a hoodie on a pre-order pre-pay basis.
3.	Suturing workshop- next planned for 19-11-08 We are still awaiting arrival of the ordered materials.
7.	Anatomy workshop- Michael. Jan is positive regarding this event but further planning and liaison is necessary
13.	Amy Mc Cornish
14.	Cliona Flynn
15.	Claire Roberts
16.	Patrick McGuigan

Items Discussed

1.	Luke gave attendees an over-view of the group trip to London for the RCSL Plastics event (Careers in Surgery Day). The trip was very beneficial and informative and revealed that training post numbers are soon to be increased (doubled consultancy places) thus alleviating competition for posts. It also revealed that we are very on-point with our suturing workshops as this was very similar to the simulation workshop run on the day. The college also revealed they plan to host regional events and would consider coming to Belfast.

2.	Aarti took sizes and numbers for initial orders for the Scrubs hoodie. They will cost £15-20 and MPS have agreed to pay for hoodies for the committee. We have decided this year to go with a more generic design to allow members and conference attendees to purchase a hoodie. Committee will have some discerning feature on said hoodie (committee or last name ??)

3. The next suturing workshop has been booked for 19th November. Michal Taylor is booking the rooms with the anatomy department. We are also awaiting the arrival of ordered materials. Bryan is liaising with the company on this matter.

4.	Draw for pastest books

a.	Edwina Hegarty 1st year (1011) EMQ’s for medical students vol 1
b.	Richard Morrisson 2nd year (2016) EMQ’s for medical students vol 2
c.	Therese McCartney 3rd year (3006) EMQ’s for medical students vol 3
d.	Erin Kerr 4th year (4004) Data Interpretation

5.	Careers Night Plan – at 7.30 in the Space . No wine allowed due to licencing issues. Pippa and Amy are sorting drinks. Sorca is sorting the “buffet”

6.	Women in Surgery - There is an annual conference in London and we elected a new rep to attend this. Aarti and Koo both expressed interest. Aarti was drawn as representative however koo will accompany her to the conference on Mon 1-12-08

7.	Cheque for MMR – Sara

8.	CONFERENCE

a.	Venues provisionally booked – MBC (£60 x 2, Space, postgrad lecture theatre BCH (£200)
b.	Posters – 4/6 A1 size, A4 PRN
c.	BMJ ad – black and white £230
d.	Bags – clever baggers, using some conference poster wording
e.	Ideas for talks – central lines, TA workshop, Dr. Diamond (Bryan contacting), Radiology(Bryan contacting), ABG’s, ALS (Sandy and Catherine ??), Obs and Gynae emergencies (Sorca contacting), psychiatric emergencies (sorca contacting) ,
f.	food/catering (Claire and Connor),
g.	application form (Sorca)
h.	Timetable – needs further discussion (next meeting)
i.	Sponsors
j.	Cost – we decided to lower the cost to £15 considering the credit crunch and the desire to attract overseas students
k.	Promotional trip-planned for Dublin (RCSI, UCD, TCD)
l.	Accommodation – research B and Bs , hotels etc in locality and gauge prices for recommendation
m.	Buffet that evening (Claire )- we suggested covering the cost of speakers etc and charging £5 a head for delegates

9.	Anatomy event – Michael
10.	First Aid – Micheal/Anna contacting Sandy and/or red Cross

On Sunday 19th October 2008, four of the committee attended an event, organised by the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) in the Royal College of Surgeons in London. The aim of the day was to provide students with an insight into careers in plastic surgery.

Presentations were given by some of the country’s leading plastic surgeons, including lectures on;
•	the History of Plastic Surgery,
•	Hand Surgery,
•	the Healing Foundation,
•	Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction,
•	Burns,
•	Trauma,
•	Lower Limb Surgery,
•	Skin Cancer,
•	Paediatric Plastic Surgery
•	Aesthetic Surgery.

Attendees were given the opportunity to watch a “surgical cinema” (footage from the operating theatre). Informal advice was given about where to go for electives based on plastic surgery, and also about how to get into plastic surgery. Students were also given the opportunity to tour the BAPRAS archive and practice suturing.

The main “take home” messages from the day were that the media perception of plastic surgeons was grossly distorted and that cosmetic surgery was only one small part of a plastic surgeon’s job. The speakers also stressed that plastic surgeons are becoming increasingly involved in the treatment of cancer patients. Mr AR Green, the president of BAPRAS, emphasised that plastic surgery is possibly the most competitive field in surgery. However he said that the NHS planned to double the number of consultancy posts in plastic surgery in the next few years and this should lower the competition for posts and speed career progression.

It was a very successful and worthwhile day which was useful for anyone interested in pursuing a career in plastic surgery.
